Researcher for Blood of the Irish ( DVD released) 2 hour documentary. RTE. Crossing the Line Films. Winner of Irish Film and Television Awards. Random notes on Todays Broadcast Interview Zlata Today we talkZ with Zlata, who was researcher for the 2 hour series on the origins of the Irish and how Irish DNA played a determining factor. Bosnia to Ireland. Zlata was originally from Bosnia, but has relocated to Ireland for 15 years. She has studied genetics and social anthropology. We talk about about different places in the world and how it compares to Ireland. She notes a similar feeling from the people of Bosnia and Ireland, despite superficial differences. ‘Y’ DNA Markers We also discuss genetic markers which make DNA so useful to us. They relied a bit upon the research already done at Trinity College Dublin, and studies done in Northwest Ireland. O’Neill connection She spoke of the genetic signature which has had a great influence on the Irish in the north, from ‘Neil of the 9 Hostages’ around the 5th century AD. We also note the R1b marker and M222 of more recent discovery. The connection to the Basque people is remarkable. The Basque People. Those who survived the Ice Age in the Basque area of Spain and France, are those closest related to the Irish. The connection dates back some 8,000 years. We also note the DNA found in Irish caves dating back thousands of years. That includes bear DNA and human DNA. It is notable that the Viking connections are fewer than earlier thought, as we have noted in earlier episodes of this podcast. The Black Irish and the Spanish Armada The Spanish Armada has generally been exaggerated over time, as far as being the origin of the ‘Black Irish’ in the west of Ireland. They actually date back thousands of years earlier than the armada. Clare Bones In a cave in Clare, an ancient childs bones were found and DNA extracted and matched to living children in Clare. An Irish Mystery 8,000 years back is as far as we can go back for known human settlements in Ireland - but it is some 700,000 years for England ! That remains a mystery.

Born in Tipperary, he was a prominent BBC Broadcaster earlier in his career. We have an interesting and wide ranging chat today, and there should be several topic that will be of interest, for example: 1) The Delaney Family Origins The two origins of the Delaney name, having arrived with the Norman invasions of the 12th century in one case. There is also the old Irish Family of Delaney (as the name may be spelled today). 2) The Famine The effects of the famine and why it has been a topic avoided for so long. 3) The Irish National Anthem The movement to change the National Anthem of Ireland. 4) The Origins of St. Patrick Includes a theory as to why he might have needed a confession. 5) Irish genealogy Frank recommends the best place to start a family search. 6) Notes on his latest work, Venetia Kelly’s Travelling Show, and life in Ireland. Frank also includes his families reaction to the time of the famine in Ireland, and why there has been a silence for generations.

From the Irish Roots Cafe at www.Irishroots.com The Sack of Baltimore, County Cork, 1631 Now here is an example of Irish genealogy that requires a knowledge of history. The 17th century was tramatic for all those in Ireland. The Battle of Kinsale, the Flight of the Earls, Cromwell, The Treaty of Limerick all happened in that century. Tens of thousands of men were exiled to the continent, these were the wild geese of Ireland. The native Irish families lost their lands and influence entirely. A way of life was gone. The Village of Baltimore, Co. Cork Originally under the shadow of O’Driscolls Castle, this seaport was profitable in business English settlers had been granted rights there. Many say that Coppinger of County Cork had designs on the town and its profits, and he may have had something to do with the tragic affair. Hacket the Traitor It seems Hacket, a fisherman from Dungarvan, was captured by the pirates earlier and he gave up the town of Baltimore to the pirates, in exchange for his safety. So, two ships with these pirates arrived to burn, rob, terrorize and take hostages. The bloody band included Algerians, Ottoman Turks and Dutchmen. Their captain was Dutch. They took around 107 hostages, only two of which are said to have ever returned.

His gr gr grandmother was named Janet b. @ 1848, and cannot find anything on the name.... I checked the spelling quickly and saw that the common spellings were more often Starat(t) and Starett and that shows up in Donegal in my records. If you have addtional info, pass it on !

Gives me another chance to start the study, eh ? I’ve been looking at the role of the letter ‘h’ in Irish and where it came from. Often used to eliminate letters that were not found in others alphabets..... and how about adding vowels when you say the word, the did not write the vowels some ancient alphabets..... ( film, and filim, etc..) 2) Just posted a short video of Australian song and refreshment, and it seems several friends on FB are ready to go, including my friend Walt Harper in Savannah, Georgia, and then Roxanne said she would like to go too, and then Karen. So... it’s on the list... Sounds like fun to me, and we’ll here more about the Australian Irish in a few minutes.... 3. And...it looks like we have been placed on a top 50 best genealogy blog list again. Here is the list. http://www.zencollegelife.com/50-best-genealogy-blogs ........... see more at the Irish Roots web page.
